City of Gilroy Recycling & Garbage Program Overview

Recycling LogoRecycling is more important than ever before to citizens in the City of Gilroy. There is a pressing need to preserve our environment, save natural resources and reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills.

South Valley Disposal & Recycling, Inc. is proud to be your recycling and garbage service provider in the City of Gilroy. Whether it is the driver that picks up your garbage and recycling or the customer service representative that answers your questions, our goal is to provide our customers with the best service possible.

Our programs and services have assisted the City of Gilroy in reaching a waste diversion rate of 58%! This is a great accomplishment and new programs like the new single stream recycling cart will give residents the tools to increase the amount of recycling they divert from the garbage waste stream.

Collection Information

Single Stream Recycling is Here!

South Valley Disposal & Recycling and the City of Gilroy have improved the recycling program by changing the recycling containers from bins to a cart.

The easy-to-wheel blue recycling cart helps reduce litter, discourages scavenging and provides greater capacity. Single-stream recycling also means no more sorting and no more heavy lifting. Studies have shown that with the convenience of single-stream recycling will come greater participation and increased recycling volumes, which will help reduce the amount of materials going to our landfills.

Your garbage, recycling, and yard waste cart will all be collected by an automated truck. This means a mechanical arm retrieves, empties, and sets the cart down in the street without the driver leaving the truck.

New Split-Body Trucks

We now use split-body trucks. These trucks empty both your garbage and recycling carts. With this new program, your garbage and recycling will be collected in the same truck. Please make sure your carts are set at least 18 inches away from each other, and any obstructions, (such as vehicles).

This efficient collection system works best when all of the containers are at least 18 inches apart as shown in the picture below.

Service Schedule
All of your containers, along with batteries, used motor oil and oil filters are collected weekly.

Your recycling, compost, and garbage containers need to be placed in the street, wheels against the curb, the night before your service day, or by 6:00 a.m. on your service day.

Collection times may vary throughout the day.

Please make sure your carts are set at least 18 inches apart and at least 18 inches from obstructions (such as vehicles).

Yard Waste and Food Scrap Collection
Yard waste and food scraps are collected weekly.
